Comment 6 - Annual Campaigns, Rosso's excerpt, and Murphy's article

In Rosso’s article he states annual campaigns serve to establish a base that serve as an effective device to involve, inform, and bond a constituency between the organization and donors. With a successful annual campaign, the organization can go on to bigger and better things in addition to providing a steady flow of income for programs, services, and activities it provides for the community. There is a carefully thought out, planned, and implemented approach to raising necessary money in an orderly and timely manner with an annual campaign. Without an annual campaign, organizations often finds themselves involved in crisis fund raising where they can not raise money. In Murphy’s article, he states a very important key point that not-for-profits must be able to demonstrate that they are able to deliver value in a number of ways because “it costs money to raise money.” Not for profits should use marketing not only to educate the public about their mission but also to generate funding....

Pre-flection on Call to Action Day

On Call to Action Day we are providing service to others by preparing and giving out food/meals to the less fortunate. The program we plan on working with is Ecumenical Hunger Program located in East Palo Alto on October 11th, 2016. During this 5 hour program numerous gifts will be given out such as Food Boxes and Hot Meals. Call to Action Day connects to our Freshman Seminar classes through the Hallmarks of Notre Dame de Namur University. This is due to Hallmark 4 which is “we commit ourselves to community service” because it is based upon the outcomes of an NDNU student through service learning. It is nice to know that I will be volunteering and giving back to my community on my birthday. However, because Call to Action Day is on my birthday it gives me a sense that I am doing something worthwhile for the people who are in need instead of focusing on myself which touches my heart dearly. When I volunteer I see the lives I have helped with my service which makes me emotional and reali...

2nd Enrichment Reflection - 21st Annual Kaiser Permanente Northern California International Dragon Boat Festival

The second event I attended was the 21st Annual Kaiser Permanente Northern California International Dragon Boat Festival on September 17th and 18th, 2016 at Lake Merritt in Oakland, CA. This event was hosted as a community festival for people to watch dragon boat clubs from all over California race together at they raced to the sound of Chinese drums. This was a two-day, admission-free festival brings a weekend of world-class dragon boat racing, spectacular cultural performances, delicious food, a variety of clothes and crafts vendors, and kid-friendly activities in Dragon Land where games and arts & crafts await. This was the first time I had attended this boat and it was such a pleasurable experience. The reason why I went was because my cousins and I performed as a cultural performance. We performed for both days for a 20 minute time slot as we sang and dance. In addition, I also met three women who were crowned as Miss San Jose, Miss Chinese America, and Miss Chinese Global A...

Comment 5 - “Special Events”, Smialek’s and Devney’s Article

The Article “Special Events” gave some “rule of thumb” for fundraisers. In the article it states that is has become increasingly difficult in order to meet goals of fundraising and to obtain money. The first tip was of Corporate Sponsors and Vendors because since sponsorships are hard to obtain so in order to obtain more profit, we must secure more sponsorships in order to escalate event costs without having to pay back the same amount to the donors. Next on the list was Volunteers, stating to require training and planning, these people are crucial to the fundraiser because the reason for the event is because of people and their mission to do so. Keeping participation and enthusiasm is important so that we do not lose them. In addition, Constituents who attend the event are important as well because we need people and attendees for the fundraiser in order to make money. I believe this will be the hardest part during our journey because it is hard to attract people especially if we are...
